Monocular blindness from drusen of the optic disk.

چکیده
Arcuate scotomas and occasionally severe peripheral constriction of the visual field are familiar sequelae of drusen of the optic disk. Loss of central vision with this disk anomaly is rare and its occurrence always demands additional investigations. It has been a long established rule that monocular blindness cannot be attributed to the progressive neurovascular complications of optic disk dru sen. This report documents an exception to this rule.

متن کاملDecreased visual acuity from optic disc drusen.
Although visual field defects occur commonly from optic disc drusen, reduction in visual acuity is rare. We describe four patients with reduced visual acuity and one with visual field constriction to the point of legal blindness that resulted from optic disc drusen. The acute episodic and stepwise nature of visual loss in some of the cases in our series suggests a vascular mechanism. Reduced vi...

PURPOSE To determine the effect of optic disc drusen on the latency of the pattern-reversal checkerboard visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and multifocal (mf)VEPs and to better understand the pathophysiology of the condition. METHODS Eighteen eyes with optic disc drusen (10 patients) and 38 control eyes (19 subjects) underwent VEP, mfVEP, and visual field testing. Only one eye of each individua...

AIM To report photographically the evolution of an astrocytic hamartoma of the left optic nerve head over a 2-year follow-up in a patient with retinitis pigmentosa. METHODS A 14-year-old boy was seen in the medical retina clinic with a 3-year history of night blindness. Best corrected visual acuity was 6/18 in both eyes. Colour vision was normal in both eyes and confrontation fields showed pe...
متن کاملOptic disk drusen.
Optic disk drusen occur in 3.4 to 24 per 1,000 population and are bilateral in approximately 75%. Disturbance in the axonal metabolism in the presence of a small scleral canal--regardless of eyelength--is considered responsible for the development. The drusen increase in size, becoming more visible with age due to continuing calcium apposition, and they are associated with visual field defects ...
